About

Tuesday is market day in Artà, in Mallorca's hilly north-east, and it is one of the most genuinely local markets you can find. Stalls line the pedestrian Carrer de Ciutat and Plaça del Conqueridor and thread through the cobbled streets beneath the hill-top sanctuary, while a covered hall handles the fresh produce. This is where you still find the island's traditional dwarf-palm basketry — baskets, hats and bags woven by the few locals who still master the craft — alongside farm vegetables, herbs, regional cheeses, sobrassada, olive oil, wine, honey, almonds, bread and pastries. Locals do their weekly shop here, so it stays a working market rather than a souvenir bazaar; the setting among historic stone buildings also makes it one of the prettiest on the island. Runs roughly 09:00 to 14:00, and is at its liveliest in the April–October season.
