La Llotja de Palma

German artist Katharina Grosse turns La Llotja de Palma into one enormous painting with Arrels, an ambitious site-specific intervention on view from 28 May 2026 to 31 January 2027. Grosse builds a landscape of earth mounds and a vast tree — uprooted and half-buried — and covers the whole scene in colour until the lines between nature, sculpture, architecture and paint dissolve. Unable to physically touch the protected 15th-century building, she instead converts its entire interior into a surface for painting, where "everything is painting." The exhibition is a co-production of the Govern de les Illes Balears and Es Baluard Museu, curated by David Barro. It runs all summer in one of Palma's most striking Gothic landmarks, and admission is free. When: 28 May 2026 – 31 Jan 2027 · Where: La Llotja de Palma · Admission: free.

WHAT HAPPENS

The shape of it

A painted landscape indoors
Grosse fills the Gothic hall with mounds of earth and a huge uprooted tree, all covered in colour until nature, sculpture and architecture blur into one another.
Inside a 15th-century landmark
The intervention is staged in La Llotja, Palma's dramatic Gothic merchants' exchange, which the artist could not physically alter — so she turned it into a landscape instead.
