Total Solar Eclipse over Mallorca — Public Viewing with AstroMallorca

Calvià (Santa Ponça), Mallorca·17:30

On 12 August 2026 a total solar eclipse sweeps across the south of Mallorca — the first total eclipse visible from the island in generations. For a little over a minute and a half, just before sunset, the Moon slides fully across the Sun, the sky darkens, the temperature drops and the stars come out over the Mediterranean before the light returns. In Calvià, the Asociación Astronómica de Mallorca (AstroMallorca) and the Biblioteques de Calvià frame the event with free public workshops — the Taller dels Eclipsis — that explain how an eclipse works and, above all, how to watch it without harming your eyes. The municipality has designated Santa Ponça beach as its official observation zone (Zona d'Observació Oficial) with a special plan for a safe, orderly viewing. Timeline (Mallorca): Partial phase begins ≈ 19:38 · Totality ≈ 20:31, lasting about 1 min 36 s in the Palma area (the longest in Spain) · Sun only ~2° above the horizon at maximum. Watch it safely: Certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses or solar filters for the whole partial phase · Never look directly at the Sun · Ordinary sunglasses are not enough. Plan ahead: Pick a viewpoint with a clear western horizon · Arrive early — traffic and crowds are expected in the official zone · The free library workshops need advance registration with a Mallorca library-network card.

WHAT HAPPENS

The shape of it

Totality just before sunset
The Moon fully covers the Sun over southern Mallorca around 20:31, with roughly 1 minute 36 seconds of total darkness in the Palma area — the longest totality anywhere in Spain — moments before the Sun sets.
A slow 90-minute build-up
The partial phase begins around 19:38 as the Moon takes a first bite out of the Sun and the light slowly fades, building for about an hour and a half to the brief moment of totality.
Santa Ponça's official viewing zone
Santa Ponça beach is designated Calvià's official observation zone (Zona d'Observació Oficial) for the eclipse, with a special municipal plan to keep the viewing safe and orderly.
Free family eclipse workshops
In the run-up, the Biblioteques de Calvià host free 'Taller dels Eclipsis' workshops led by AstroMallorca (the island's astronomical association), explaining how an eclipse works and how to watch it safely.
A very low Sun — pick your horizon
At maximum the Sun sits only about 2 degrees above the horizon, so a spot with a clear, unobstructed western horizon — the sea, a rise or the waterfront — makes or breaks the view.

GOOD TO KNOW

Before you go

Never look at the Sun directly — use certified (ISO 12312-2) eclipse glasses or proper solar filters for the whole partial phase; ordinary sunglasses are not safe.
Arrive early and be in position well before 20:31 — totality lasts barely a minute and a half and the Sun is setting, so there is no second chance.
Choose a viewpoint with an open western horizon; the Sun is only ~2 degrees high at maximum, so buildings, hills or trees to the west will block the moment.
Santa Ponça beach is Calvià's official observation zone; expect crowds and traffic restrictions, so plan your access and arrival in advance.
The library 'Taller dels Eclipsis' workshops are free but places are limited and need advance registration with a Mallorca library-network card.
