Royal Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa
The Royal Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa (the Cartoixa) is one of Mallorca's great cultural treasures: a former royal palace turned Carthusian monastery, perched above the village of Valldemossa in the Tramuntana. A visit for all ages winds at your own pace through the monastic cells where Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand spent the winter of 1838–39, the church, the old pharmacy, the cloisters and gardens with sweeping valley views. The general ticket also includes a short live piano recital of Chopin's works in the setting where he once composed. New for 2026: the monastery has opened L'Infern to visitors — a space at the foot of the Tower of the Guests (Torre dels Hostes), built in the late 17th century. It was where the monks' relatives were received, since they were not allowed to enter the monastery itself, and it was the only place meat could be eaten, in contrast to the strict Carthusian diet of vegetables, eggs and fish. It is a new way to step into the daily life and rules of the Carthusian monks. Plan your visit: Tickets are sold on the official site.
