Son Fornés: Talayotic Settlement & Archaeological Museum

Montuïri, Mallorca·Mon–Fri 10:00–14:00; last Sunday of each month 10:00–14:00 (free open-door day)

Son Fornés, just outside Montuïri in the island's central Pla, is one of the most emblematic talayotic settlements in the Balearic Islands — a prehistoric village built around its talaiots (stone watchtowers) and inhabited from roughly the 9th century BCE. You can walk the excavated settlement and then read it through the finds displayed at the Museu Arqueològic de Son Fornés, housed in the Molí des Fraret, a restored 18th-century flour mill in the village itself. The museum traces life on Mallorca across the Talayotic, Post-Talayotic and Classical periods — from the 10th century BCE to the 1st century CE — making it an easy, family-friendly window onto Balearic Bronze and Iron Age prehistory. It's open year-round, with guided visits of the museum, the talaiot and the mill available by arrangement. Practical: general admission is €3.50 (reduced €2; free for under-12s), and the museum opens Monday to Friday 10:00–14:00, with a free open-door day on the last Sunday of each month. The excavated site sits about 2.4 km from Montuïri towards Pina; call ahead on 971 644 169 to confirm hours or book a guided visit.
