Where Mallorcans Actually Shop

The 7 Best Traditional Markets in Mallorca

From Sineu to Santa Catalina: a curated guide to the weekly markets that sustain the island's real life.

Thril. Editions6 min read · Free

There is a Mallorca that rises early, raffia bag in hand, and goes to market. Not the souvenir market, not the one for Instagram photos: the real one, where the pagesa from Sencelles explains why this year the ramellet tomatoes are smaller and the butcher keeps the good sobrassada under the counter. These markets remain the commercial and social heart of the towns of the Pla and the Serra, and of Palma neighbourhoods like Santa Catalina or Pere Garau. We have ranked seven of the best by day of the week, atmosphere and produce. At number one, the Mercat de Sineu: the oldest on the island, founded by royal privilege of Jaume II in 1306, and the only one that still keeps a live livestock section every Wednesday morning. If you only go to one, make it that — but ideally, go to them all.
