Los Ribalta y el barroco naturalista

Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga

The Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga presents Los Ribalta y el barroco naturalista, on view from 22 May to 4 October 2026. The show gathers ten works by Francisco Ribalta and his son Juan Ribalta, two of the great names of 17th-century Valencian painting, on loan from the Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia and curated by its director, Pablo González Tornel. Pieces such as San Bruno and Magdalena después de la comunión show how the Ribaltas moved away from Mannerism toward an emotionally charged naturalism made to stir the devotion of Counter-Reformation Spain — a language they share with contemporaries like Zurbarán and Velázquez.
