19th-century Spanish and Andalusian painting in a 16th-century Renaissance palace
The Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga occupies the restored 16th-century Palacio de Villalón, in the heart of Málaga's old town. Its permanent collection draws on the holdings of Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza — around 230 works — and offers one of the finest surveys of 19th-century Spanish and Andalusian painting, running from the start of the 1800s to the threshold of modernity, with a strong focus on landscape and costumbrista genre scenes. A selection of old masters rounds out the display, among them a Santa Marina by Zurbarán. The museum complements the permanent galleries with a lively programme of temporary exhibitions.
