Festa des Meló, Vilafranca de Bonany

Vilafranca de Bonany town centre

Vilafranca de Bonany, a small farming town in Mallorca's inland Pla, is famous across the island for its melons — and the Festa des Meló (officially the Festa i Fira del Meló) is its signature agricultural fiesta. Held on the first weekend of September, it fills the town centre with market stalls, folk music and a month-long run of cultural events built around the summer's sweetest fruit. What happens: The melon takes centre stage. Local Mallorcan varieties are displayed and offered up for free tasting, while the headline event is the contest for the largest and heaviest melon grown on the island — a hotly-followed weigh-in that in 2025 produced a specimen of more than 20 kilos. Beyond the fruit, the streets come alive with a market of regional produce and crafts, food stalls, live music, traditional ball de bot folk dancing and community gatherings, spreading out along the main street that runs through the village. Good to know: The open-air fair is free to attend and the melon tastings cost nothing. It falls on the first weekend of September, but the exact dates move from year to year, so check the town hall's festes page before planning a visit. Everything is concentrated in Vilafranca de Bonany's compact town centre and along its main street.
