The Reial Cartoixa de Valldemossa is the monumental heart of the highest village in the Serra de Tramuntana. A former Carthusian monastery, it is famous as the place where composer Frédéric Chopin spent the winter of 1838–1839 with writer George Sand; the cells they occupied are still preserved. The visit includes cloisters, gardens, the pharmacy and brief piano recitals throughout the day. An ideal stop for the first day of a campervan route: leave the vehicle in the outskirts car parks —the old town streets are very narrow— and explore the village on foot. General admission costs €12.50 (VAT included; under-10s free), with Chopin's cell as a supplement. Open Monday to Friday 10:00–17:00 and Saturday 10:00–16:00. The 15-minute piano recitals are scheduled at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:15 and 14:15.
